Microsoft has announced that Entra ID now supports passkey-first authentication as the default sign-in method for enterprise users. Passkeys, which are phishing-resistant cryptographic credentials, replace traditional passwords for accessing corporate resources.
The move is part of Microsoft's broader effort to eliminate passwords entirely, following similar initiatives from Apple and Google. Passkeys can be stored on devices (phones, laptops, security keys) and synchronized across devices using cloud services.
Early adopters report an 80% reduction in password-related help desk tickets and a 95% decrease in successful phishing attacks against their organizations.
