The FBI Internet Crime Report for 2026 reveals that Business Email Compromise (BEC) losses have exceeded $12 billion, with deepfake voice-cloning technology now being used in 73% of all BEC attacks.
Attackers are using publicly available voice samples from social media and corporate websites to clone executive voices, then calling employees to authorize fraudulent wire transfers. The sophistication of these attacks has made them increasingly difficult to detect using traditional security awareness training alone.
Recommendations include implementing multi-channel verification for financial transactions, deploying AI-powered voice analysis tools, and establishing strict call-back protocols for all fund transfer requests.
